Crab Island can best be seen from the Destin bridge heading West or towards Okaloosa Island. You will see lots of boats bunched together in light colored water (there is no island, it's a sand bar.)
All you will ever see in pictures of the "island" in Destin Florida are boats and people, no island.
Whatever the cause tides and currents, or powerful hurricanes that passed through many moons ago. This small strip of sand and sea grass, once a place for picnics, camping, and snorkeling is now anywhere between two and ten feet below the water.
Between April and November this Destin "beach" can be seen completely covered with all sorts of water craft. This is a popular spot for locals as well as visitors to come and relax, cool off, or just play with family and friends.
People come on anything that floats, mostly pontoon and other power boats of all shapes and sizes. You will also see sailboats, and if no boat whatever it takes.
You can rent a boat or bring your own, or just rent a Wave Runner, Kayak, or even a paddle Board to get out here and enjoy the fun.
Raft-up with one or more boats for your own little flotilla, or find
your own spot. Play in the water, stay under the canopy or get some sun
on the deck or floating in the shallow aqua green water.
Play Frisbee, football or other water sports. Bring your own volleyball net or join in the public one available at certain times (Wed. thru Sun.)
There are a giant water slide (shown here) and trampoline during the summertime making it fun for the whole family.
A word of caution with all the alcohol and party atmosphere it can get crazy especially on weekends and special occasions like Billy Bowlegs Pirate Festival, and on the 4th of July holiday.
Parents can take precautions for your children if you prefer there is a family area that is not clearly marked but supposedly known.
If you cruise around and can't find that area, an easy way to get away from the craziness is park your boat away from the action. You can still enjoy swimming, snorkeling, and playing in the water, or come with another family and set up your own little fun spot.
From April to November your options for food will vary. There is are floating restaurants, bars, ice cream boats, and more.
You can have wide variety to choose from, hot dogs and hamburgers, chicken and fish sandwiches and you can even get pizza delivered by jet ski.
Plenty of drinks for your enjoyment bottle beer, draft beer, wine, and mixed drinks, as well as soft drinks, and bottled water.
All sorts of frozen delights to cool you off may be brought right to your boat, if not they are not too far away.
Not all do, but the Sinkin' Weenie does accept credit cards. (blue and yellow boat on the right above)
